Prof. El Saeed: BNU’s "Top 10" Ranking in a Global Sustainability Index Highlights Its Growing International Standing Despite Its Recent Establishment
Prof. Gamal El Saeed, Chair of the Board of Trustees of Benha National University, announced that the University has achieved a new milestone in sustainability, ranking among the top 10 Egyptian universities in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. Benha National University ranked 10th among Egyptian universities and 551st globally, in an edition that included 2,016 higher education institutions from 110 countries, including 47 Egyptian universities.
Prof. Gamal El Saeed said the result reflects the University’s rapid institutional development and its ability to establish a strong presence in international rankings within a relatively short period since its establishment. He noted that achieving this position in an international ranking dedicated to sustainability demonstrates the University’s commitment to developing a modern higher education institution guided by clear standards of quality, excellence and sustainability.
He explained that sustainability has become an integral part of the University’s institutional approach and operations. The University is working to develop its infrastructure, improve resource efficiency and expand environmentally responsible practices, alongside advancing education, research, innovation and digital transformation in line with global developments in higher education.
Prof. Gamal added that strengthening the University’s international standing is closely linked to the development of its international relations. In this regard, the University is expanding academic and research partnerships with universities and international institutions, promoting knowledge and expertise exchange, creating opportunities for international mobility for students and faculty members, and participating in international academic networks and events. These efforts contribute to strengthening the University’s international presence and creating new opportunities for academic and research collaboration.
He further emphasised that the University is continuing to build on the integration of sustainability, international rankings, international relations, research and innovation as key areas in developing a competitive university with a strong regional and international presence. He noted that the 2026 UI GreenMetric result represents an important step in the University’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its competitiveness and consolidate its position among emerging higher education institutions.
Prof. Tamer Samir, President of Benha National University, said the University’s performance in the 2026 UI GreenMetric Rankings reflects the combined efforts of its various sectors to implement and embed sustainability principles across the University. He noted that the University is continuously developing its infrastructure, improving resource efficiency and strengthening environmentally responsible practices, while advancing education, research and digital transformation.
The President explained that the University’s ranking is the result of sustained efforts to enhance institutional and academic performance and develop its various areas of operation in accordance with contemporary standards. He affirmed the University’s continued commitment to strengthening its performance in international rankings and translating sustainability criteria into effective, long term practices across the University.
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings is an international ranking focused on assessing universities’ sustainability efforts. The 2026 edition evaluates institutions across a range of key indicators, including infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water, transportation, education and research, as well as governance and digital transformation, which was introduced as a new indicator in this year’s edition.
